Following a joint campaign by Plan International UK and the blood service for England, Unicode announced that a blood drop symbol will be among the new emoji released later this year along with 229 other emojis on Twitter.

The intention of the campaign is to break the the stigma and shame around menstruation and normalize the conversation.

Here is how Twitter reached to the news

Many argued that the drop of blood may not correctly signify menstruation, but here is what Plan International replied to the tweets.

The inclusion of an emoji which can express what 800 million women around the world are experiencing every month is a huge step towards normalizing periods and smashing the stigma which surrounds them,” Head of Girls Rights at Plan International, Lucy Russell, said.

“For years we’ve obsessively silenced and euphemised periods… An emoji isn’t going to solve this, but it can help change the conversation. Ending the shame around periods begins with talking about it.”
